Merakey Divisions Restructure Amid a Pandemic

In January 2020, Merakey employees, individuals and families served, and communities supported were all excited by the opportunities that come with a new year. Merakey entered the last phase of our Strategic Plan FY17 – 20, and we were anxious to begin our new Plan in just a few short months. In late January, Merakey embarked on a new organizational structure to help us align with changes being made at national and state levels – encouraging integrated care and preventative services, ultimately enabling providers to deliver a higher level of care to the individuals and families they serve. In response to these innovative and needed changes, Merakey reorganized its Divisions into Children and Family Services and Adult Behavioral Health Services. This reorganization will help make sure that we are positioned to provide the highest quality health and human services that we can to the individuals, families, and communities we serve.

In February
, COVID-19 began to show signs of becoming not only a national, but a worldwide pandemic. Merakey was already organizing a task force to quickly respond to the many questions and concerns that affected the Merakey family, and to make decisions to keep the individuals we serve and our employees as safe as possible. By mid-March, difficult decisions had to be made in response to COVID-19, including pausing our reorganization efforts. In late April, we resumed the transition of services under the new Divisions and completed the restructure by June 30. Throughout the transition and the pandemic, Merakey’s employees displayed heroism – going above and beyond what was required of their jobs to ensure that the individuals and families we serve received exceptional care. Merakey is grateful to all our heroes.

Our Employees are Heroes

Going Above and Beyond

Staff members at Merakey’s East Berlin Behavioral Health Assisted Living Group Home went above and beyond to keep consumers engaged in a variety of fun activities during the stay-at-home orders this past spring. Music, games, outdoor activities, and visits from a beloved pet helped to keep residents from feeling isolated and depressed.

Learning Continues at Home

While Merakey Autism and Education Centers were closed following local and state orders to shut down schools in March, many parents and students, including Shane from Merakey Autism Center in Fort Worth, TX, continued their ABA (applied behavior analysis) activities at home with support and guidance from teachers working remotely.

Message of Thanks

Overcoming Challenges and Gaining Independence

Chris, a participant from Merakey’s Intensive Transition Services (ITS) program in Southern California, recently graduated from the program. Staff from the ITS program held a virtual graduation ceremony, complete with music, dancing, and the awarding of a graduation certificate. With support from Merakey staff and others, Chris overcame his challenges, and he is excited to be living independently in his home, without the need for ITS services.
